Basketball Lesson Plan - Grade 4

Skills:
  • Passes while moving forward
Game:basketball 3:3/ 4:4 on half field

Materials for whole unit:

6 sets of 4 pinnies, 15 basketballs, 4 medium cones, 8 small cones, 4 hula hoops, cd player, music mix for working in stations
Skills:

  • Students are lined up in two lines.
Playing:
  • Teams of three students
  • Students play on half field
Skills:
  • Move sideways
  • catch and pass in the the same movement (same step)
  • Slow down for a moment if you will make too many steps
Game:
  • Focus on positions, go to a place where you're open, not too close, not too far.
  • Only passes
  • Walking rule, only pivot is allowed.
  • The ball has to start in the middle circle in order to make a point.
  • When intercepted, passes to the middle circle are free, without defense.

4 Stations:
  1. passes while moving forward
  2. circling with ball around ankles, legs, body and head
  3. passes and catches against the board of the basket
  4. dribbling with basketball glasses
Skills:
  • Lay up, only steps and shoot movement

Game:

3:3/ 4:4 on half field

  • use lay up whenever possible and in position
4 Stations:
  • Students are divided over the four stations
  • Do exercises on the “Shakira” song (1:20 min), run or jog around the field on the “Juanes” song (0:35 min)
  • Change to next station when “Juanes” ends and start again on Shakira.
  • Balls are in the hula hoops at the station when not used..
Skills:
  • Students work in couples, each couple has a ball.
Lay up (for right handed people):
  • Ball starts at chest
  • Pivot foot is left which is standing back
  • Sequence is: Step with left, jump with left, shoot with right hand
  • Take ball all the way up
  • Shoot softly, basket will be close

Lay up (for right handed people):
  • Same as class 2
Game:
  • try to get in an position to make a lay up
  • Have feet in the right position to do the sequence when getting the ball

  • Passes moving forward finish with lay up
Game:3:3/ 4:4 half field
Skills:
  • Students make 4 lines and work from the middle towards the two baskets on the end
  • Person on the side of the stairs makes lay up and takes the ball back
  • Put a cone/ tape a on the field where they should start making the lay up.
Skills:
  • Apply walking rule when making lay up
  • have right foot in front when catching the ball. Then step, jump and shoot.
  • Start lay up outside the white lines of the basket.

Assessing lay up
Playing3:3/ 4:4 half field

Additional material:

Stopwatch

  • ½ of the class starts playing on half a field
  • ½ of the class starts doing the assessment of the lay up
3 teams, each game is 4 ½ minutes
4 teams, each game is 3 minutes
Game:
Students are responsible for time keeping and changing the teams.

Tournament:

teams of 3
Play on half field

Teams of 3, two fields:

Games are each 4 ½ minutes
Win is 3 points
Even is 1 point
Lose is 0 points
  • Apply the lay ups in the game
  • Keep field open, go to positions where you can get the ball, not too far, not too close from the ball.
